TAIKA WAITITI Casts Doubt on Whether He’ll Direct AKIRA Adaptation

Thor: Love & Thunder director Taika Waititi may not ever get back around to his planned live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga and anime Akira – though he thinks someone will.

“I think eventually it will happen,” Waititi told Variety following last Sunday’s Oscars, where he won ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ for Jojo Rabbit. “I’m just not sure if I’ll be doing it.”

Akira was previously put on hold to accomodate filming Love & Thunder, with Akira‘s planned release date later taken over by The Matrix 4 – but the delay may wind up pushing Waititi off the film entirely.

“The whole thing went on hold. We had to keep pushing the dates, and it encroached on the [Thor: Love & Thunder] dates, which were immovable,” Waititi elaborated. “So Akira ended up shifting two years down the track. Post-Thor. So I’m not sure if even in two years I’d be — I don’t know what I’m doing in f—ing two days.”
